Job Description
*The Archaeologist for Oklahoma Department of Transportation works under supervision within a team of subject matter experts in identification and National Register of Historic Places evaluation of archaeological resources. As authorized agents consulting with the State Historic Preservation Office and other consulting parties, the Archaeologist conducts and reviews Section 106 evaluations of prehistoric and historic-period archaeological resources for transportation undertakings. These projects largely include roadway and bridge improvements projects, assessment of effects to cultural resources, and review and preparation of context studies. The work is a mix of oversight of consultant-prepared cultural resources survey reports, contractor-submitted project information, and fieldwork and report preparation for in-house projects. The position provides for a mix of office work, telework, and fieldwork, as possible and needed.
Essential Duties
- Performs research in areas related to project needs or in a designated field of science.
- Plans, designs and conducts scientific experiments.
- Performs fieldwork as needed to make observations and collect data.
- Analyzes and interprets data.
- Presents research results and prepares research for publication.
- Operates and maintains highly technical research equipment and facilities and assists others in the proper use of equipment.
- Procures supplies and equipment needed for laboratory and field operations.
- Assists in preparing funding proposals.
- Assists with the preparation, identification, and cataloging of information and specimens.
- Conducts literature searches as needed.
- May teach one or more classes or seminars.
- Conduct project tasks as an Archaeology Subject Matter Expert including status updates, project review and tracking, scope-of-work development, and other tasks as required.
- Prepare and/or review the appropriate documentation as required by State and Federal laws and regulations.
- Identify archaeological resources and evaluate their eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places.
- Prepare and/or review documentation concerning such resources and effects to them in accordance with various State and Federal environmental laws and regulations.
- Review and comment on consultant-prepared cultural resource reports, site documentation, and resources eligibility assessments.
- Communicate and work effectively with internal and external staff, agencies, and consultants in a professional, cooperative manner.
- Communicate ideas and facts to individuals and project teams both verbally and in writing in a clear, professional, and organized manner.
- Manage own time effectively while dealing with multiple priorities.
- Read and understand plans, maps, and aerial photographs.
- Adapt to change including new Federal, State, or departmental policies and procedures.
- Problem solve, generate and evaluate alternatives to recommend a sound solution applying the appropriate rule, policy, or procedure, or suggest new methods and procedures, as needed.
- Work effectively with others to find mutually acceptable solutions.
- Performs fieldwork as needed to make observations and collect data.
- Plan and conduct cultural resource surveys and research on Federal-aid and State-aid transportation projects.
- Review and advise on mitigation of adversely affected resources.
- Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
