Crew Lead: Jones Archaeology Consulting

About the Opportunity:
Jones Archaeology Consulting Firm seeks an experienced and highly motivated Archaeology Crew Chief to lead field crews on Southeast cultural resource management (CRM) projects. This role involves leadership in daily field crew operations, acquiring survey field data, and completing assigned land surveying field projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in CRM, excellent leadership skills, and the ability to manage field crews while ensuring high-quality data collection and compliance with state and federal regulations.
Job Duties:

Lead and supervise field crews during archaeological surveys, site testing, monitoring, and excavation projects.

Ensure fieldwork is conducted in accordance with project scope, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements.

Accurately identify and record prehistoric and historic artifacts, features, and sites.

Prepare detailed field notes, maps, and documentation for technical reports.

Coordinate with Project Managers, Principal Investigators, and clients to ensure project goals are met.

Train and mentor field technicians in proper archaeological methods and safety practices.

Operate and maintain field equipment, including GPS units, digital cameras, and other survey tools.

Conduct quality control checks on field data and ensure accuracy and completeness.

Operate a company vehicle.

Manage logistics, including crew scheduling, equipment inventory, and travel arrangements.
Job Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field.

Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in CRM, including at least 1-2 years in a supervisory or crew chief role.

Demonstrated experience with Phase I, II, and III archaeological investigations.

Strong knowledge of federal and state cultural resource regulations (e.g., NHPA, NEPA, ARPA).

Proficiency with GPS technology, GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, ArcCollector), and digital data collection methods.

Ability to work in challenging field conditions, including extreme temperatures, rugged terrain, and inclement weather.

Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a Motor Vehicle background screening.

Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.

Ability to travel on short notice.

Availability for local fieldwork and extended travel (staying in hotels for up to 2 weeks at a time).
Preferred:
-
Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field.

Experience working with descendant communities.

Knowledge of local and regional cultural histories and artifact typologies.

Experienced writing technical reports and contributing to CRM documentation.
