Previous or current participation in field archaeology is required. Possible subfields include the archaeology and visual culture of African sites of cultural heritage; the material and artistic cultures of Islam in Africa; and trade, habitation, and histories of enslaved persons in and beyond Africa, in such areas as North America or the Caribbean. Teaching and service duties will be divided between the Department of Art History and Archaeology (75%) and the Department of African and African-American Studies (25%). Duties will include teaching two courses per semester (three a year in AHA and one a year in AFAS), conducting research, writing for publication, advising students, participating in department governance, and university service. The successful candidate must show strong promise of scholarly achievement and the ability to make significant contributions to both departments. Candidates must be prepared to teach undergraduate courses at all levels and graduate seminars in the visual, material, and/or urban histories of Africa and its diaspora.

Anticipated schedule: Review of complete applications will begin 25 October 2023.
