Here at ICF, we work on passion projects all the time, from helping convert America to clean energy such as solar and offshore wind to helping efforts to improve transportation across the state. In southern California, some of our local passion projects include helping communities understand and accommodate for risks to cultural resources while building resilient infrastructure across San Diego County, assisting transportation agencies with developing meaningful cultural resource mitigation in downtown Los Angeles and the Inland Empire, and that cultural resources awareness and protection is integrated into habitat conservation planning in the Southern San Joaquin Valley. One thing is for sure, being part of ICF’s cultural resources team is never boring. ICF is currently seeking a mid-career Archaeologist to be based in Southern California. The successful candidate will thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment working on some of the region’s most influential and complex environmental compliance projects.

Job Description

The  Archaeologist position will provide cultural resource field and technical writing support for public agency, utility, and land development/management clients based out of southern California. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in fieldwork and technical writing, and an interest in growing these skills in a collaborative team environment. Positions available in Los Angeles, Inland Empire,  or Orange County with the option to work remote or hybrid of office and home.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead and support field efforts in Southern California and other areas of California and the Western United States as needed. Travel for up to 10 days may be involved, with work occurring outdoors under all weather conditions.

  • Lead author for small survey and monitoring reports and assist senior ICF staff on larger writing efforts.

  • Coordinate and communicate effectively with ICF staff and construction personnel.

  • Meet deadlines, multitask, and produce quality work.

  • The ability or interest to manage small projects, including fieldwork, report deliverables, and budgets and/or provide specialized services, such GIS (ArcMap and ESRI Field Maps).

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Archaeology or related field.

  • 2+ years of experience in cultural resources management.

  • 2+ years of experience conducting field visits at locations primarily  in southern California and also throughout the western United States.

  • Must have valid driver’s license and successfully pass a Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) check.

Preferred Skills/Experience

  • Registered Professional Archaeologist.

  • 2+ years of experience in project management and/or GIS.

  • Working knowledge of Section 106 of the NHPA, NEPA, CEQA, and other state and federal environmental regulations.

  • Familiarity with California cultural resources and associated regulatory environment.

  • Fieldwork skills include pedestrian and subsurface survey, testing and evaluation, monitoring.

  • Knowledge and familiarity with computers, smart devices, and completing data entry in application interfaces and use of GPS technology (such as ESRI Collector or Field Maps).

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment.
